About the Center of Charlanta

Upstate South Carolina is more than Frank Underwood’s stomping grounds on House of Cards. It’s one of the biggest growth areas in the country. The Greenville-Spartanburg-Anderson Combined Statistical Area features the Greenville and Spartanburg MSAs. Greenville, the largest city and geographical center of this CSA, is one of the five fastest growing cities in America in 2017.

Low energy costs, abundant water, low cost of living, a 5% corporate tax rate, access to three airports within three hours, and an inland port, combined with South Carolina’s right-to-work environment, make the Upstate an affordable location for companies that want to maximize their output while minimizing costs.

South Carolina has:

  • No state-levied state property taxes
  • No local income taxes
  • No inventory taxes
  • No sales taxes on manufacturing equipment, industrial power, or materials for finished products
  • No wholesale tax
  • No unitary tax on worldwide profits

The South Carolina Department of Commerce also offers economic development incentives to businesses who choose to relocate or expand within the state. And Greenville County just received a $4 million grant to develop a system of automated taxis on public roads to serve large employers.

The Upstate and Amazon

If Amazon commits to the upstate, a significant worldwide air cargo company headquartered in the upstate has made a firm offer to invest in an air cargo center at Greenville-Spartanburg International Airport, adjacent to the inland port.
